Gabriel Adams asked:

Last 2007, the makers of the anime, Naruto, released a set of trailers concerning the First Naruto Shippuden Movie which is also the fourth in the series of Naruto movies. The trailers and the advertisements were all fraught with hints – some subtle, some blatant – about Naruto’s apparent “death”. The trailers were all dramatic – even heart-wrenching. The trailers first show Naruto fighting against some enemies, and then he dies with his headband torn and his body battered, and then, the Konoha ninja are shown to be gathered around a grave with the torn headband hanging on the side.

That trailer shocked Naruto fans all over the world. It created an uproar. Overnight, the internet was flooded with questions about the new movie. So many fans were asking whether or not Naruto does die.

That trailer was something of a phenomenon. You really had to see it to believe it. Because, really, can you honestly, after watching the whole anime, believe that Naruto would die – in a movie, no less? Of course not! The idea was just plain laughable. You just don’t kill off the greatest and most loveable protagonist since Son Goku… It’s almost immoral to do so!

But then there it was – the trailer – irrevocable proof from the makers of the anime themselves – that Naruto, Konoha’s Hokage-to-be, was going to die. It was clear as day and written in blaring letters that “Naruto Dies!”. It was unbelievable but it was official – Naruto. In the fourth movie, would die!

Or so we thought…

How could the Anime Naruto episodes end when the manga itself doesn’t even seem to be nearing the end? How could the anime end with so many unresolved issues? How could the story go on without its main character dead?

The answer: It can’t.

The ‘Naruto Dies’ thing was just an advertising trick to rope people into the cinemas. The death scene, including the funeral scene, was just a vision of a miko named Shion. She predicts Naruto’s death through a dream, and since all her previous predictions were correct, then it follows that this one would also be true – unless Naruto gives up on his job to protect her and leaves for a safe place, of course. But then again, this is Naruto we’re talking about, and he doesn’t give up, “Believe it!”. So, he challenges fate and stays to protect Shion despite the deep sense of foreboding. And, surprise surprise, he wins against fate and survives, killing off the evil villain with another rendition of the rasengan along the way. You could smell the plot’s ending a mile away – or in this case, while the opening credits were rolling and those death scenes we’ve seen on the trailers were all laid out before we could even reach the second half of the movie.

This movie, with the interesting but misleading trailer, follows the pattern of the previous movies – a scarcity of originality and a surplus of fight scenes. It has the quintessential ‘character-to-be-protected’ with the sad past, the parallelism to Naruto’s own life, the obligatory jokes and insults, and the super-evil villain who has a grudge against the world. The DVD comes out in April of 2008, and the subs should follow 2 weeks or so after the release of the DVD. It’s not the best movie in the world, but it’s still Naruto in his new Shippuden look series and Naruto is always entertaining no matter what he does. The fight scenes should be worth a look as the animators does seem to spent quite a bit of time detailing them, anyway.

On February 15, 2007, Naruto Shippuden began airing on TV Tokyo in Japan. It was like a breath of fresh air, considering that the fans had to suffer through all too many filler Naruto episodes for the better part of the previous year. The Naruto fans had to put up with non-canon episodes where Naruto performs rasengans and kage-bunshins faster than he can say dattebayo.

It was all rather depressing – that filler episodes would blotch up the great story that Kishimoto-sensei wrote. Some fans gave up the moment the fillers started, some gave up halfway, and some remarkably stuck to the anime until the very end, all of them fervently praying for the end of those hellish fillers. Well, there answer came in the form of Naruto Shippuden.

Naruto Shippuden

In the manga, Shippuden is simply known as Part 2. Shippuden, means “Whirlwind Chronicles”, obviously an allusion to Naruto’s power to manipulate wind (e.g. Rasengan). It happens after some sort of time-skip, it takes place two and half years after Sasuke’s defection from Konoha.

Now, if you try to recall, Orochimaru would have done his body-transfer jutsu on Sasuke two years ago had he not been unlucky and had to perform an emergency body transfer on someone else. His acquisition of the sharingan eye would have to wait for three years. After the time-skip, the body transfer is no longer 3 years away, but a scant 6 months. And of course, this means that Sasuke has to be rescued and quick, because if not, he’d be taken by Orochimaru and Naruto would lose his friend.

Shippuden starts with a sneak preview of a scene that has yet to be shown in the naruto episodes thus far. It is the fateful team 7 reunion where Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke meet up, not as friends but as enemies. But before more of the plot is revealed, the scene cuts and changes to the actual start of Shippuden – Naruto’s return to Konoha.

Actual Start of Part II

Naruto returns to Konoha after two and a half years of training with Jiraiya. He meets up with Sakura, who has also trained with a legendary Sannin, Tsunade, for the past two and a half years. She has grown a lot from that girl who was always left behind to a ninja who has inherited the inhuman strength and the medical prowess of her mentor. If you’ve noticed, all the members of team 7 have trained with a legendary sannin, including Sasuke, who has succumbed to evil by joining Orochimaru.

After meeting up with Sakura, they are summoned to the Hokage tower where Tsunade, the Hokage, reunites them with Kakashi. They are grouped together to form a team, but they are no longer called Team 7 but Team Kakashi. The first episode is a nostalgic remake of the Bell Test, only this time, Sasuke’s not there and Naruto and Sakura actually win by threatening to spoil the ending of Icha-icha paradise for Kakashi.

Afterwards, the series starts getting serious, as Gaara, the new Kazekage, gets kidnapped by a member of the Akatsuki. The story starts from there and, after a series of events, progresses finally to Team Kakashi’s Sasuke retrieval mission.

The first part of Naruto was great and it was surely a tough act to follow. But fortunately, Naruto Shippuden can cope. The anime series is still as interesting as ever, if not even more, what with the deepening of the plot.

Joey asked:

Anime is the Japanese word typically standing for an abbreviation of ‘animation’. The world now popularly uses this term to denote and identify objects and goods coming out of Japan, although in Japanese itself, this term is still used only to adhere to anything to do with animation in general.

Anime is commonly considered as an art form. What began in the early years of the 20th century with Japanese filmmakers using different forms of animation styles that were prevalent in the western world and adapting them to Japanese folklore by creating ‘anime(s)’ or animated figures both in film and print, has now grown to a whole full fledged anime industry. The original filmmaking form that drew from basic storytelling now finds usage in objects from interior decorations to jewelry. This is where Anime Jewelry draws its existence from.

Previously this genre was deemed to be an adult fantasy. But these days with the influx of various anime based books, movies, plays, television shows, etc that appeal to teenagers and children, anime has found its place as a popular choice for everyone. This has led to a huge demand for anime collectibles. Anime jewelry is highly fashionable and makes a great selection for almost every occasion.

The best part about this form is the tremendous abundance of choice; surprising considering how new this is in the jewelry market. Just another indication of how widespread and intense the demand for this actually is. The collectible jewelry and gifts range includes stuff like Final fantasy necklaces and rings, naurto headband, cowboy bebop necklace, totoro necklace jewelry, trigun jewelry necklace, , kingdom hearts necklace jewelry, love hina collection, fullmetal alchemist necklace.

Each of them is a masterpiece item. For example the full metal alchemist necklace collection usually includes detailed and finely cut & polished flat pendants. The final fantasy collection includes special combinations of a necklace, special keychain and a ring; all made of metal alloy material. The Naruto collection revolves around the character of Naruto and includes various headbands, rings, bangles, ear rings, necklaces worn by Naruto and his friends. Most of them revolve around the adventures of the characters and are based on the different experiences and other creatures in this fantasy world.

Although anime jewelry has been a hit with both the sexes, it makes for particularly nice gifts for girls and women. The most famous and well received ones comprise of necklaces and pins. Any online search for anime jewelry or for that matter a search even otherwise, one would often lead to stores, outlets and even dealers selling various accessories along with the jewelry. These include everything from headbands to patches, which make for special gifts too.

While choosing anime jewelry, one of the more important things to be kept in mind is the need to exercise caution, especially for people who are not big anime followers themselves. Since most of the fans of this jewelry are youngsters, youthful and vibrant themes go down particularly well.

The anime, Naruto, is based on Masashi Kishimoto’s manga of the same title. The anime is produced by Studio Pierrot and aniplex and is aired in Japan’s terrestrial TV Tokyo Network and several other networks worldwide. Naruto’s animation is fluid and each Naruto episode is filled with gripping fight scenes and beautifully portrayed characters. It currently has over 200 episodes and still counting.

Storyline

The story is about a young boy name Uzumaki Naruto. Naruto, blond-haired and blue-eyed, is a spirited, hyperactive, and overly loud ninja. He is first introduced as a troublemaker, playing various pranks and being at the bottom of his class in the ninja academy. But Naruto is not your average neighborhood brat – far from it. Naruto, despite his obvious lack in the skills, manners, and intelligence department, has lots of self-confidence and even more determination. He, though loud and uncouth, has a golden heart and a power to inspire others. He aspires to be the Hokage – the leaf village’s top ninja. He is revealed to be an orphan and to have a demon beast, the nine-tailed fox, sealed inside him, causing the villagers to shun him and even hate him. All he wants is the people’s acceptance – which he gradually gains as the story progresses.

Other Important Characters

The story starts when Naruto is placed on a genin team composed of a girl named Haruno Sakura and a boy named Uchiha Sasuke. Sakura, a pink-haired girl who cares more for her looks rather than being a ninja but has great intelligence, is Naruto’s love interest. However, she resists all his advances, even to the point of beating him up. Incidentally, Sakura is in love with Sasuke, Naruto’s ‘rival’, along with several other girls, all of whom are blatantly ignored and scoffed at by the said boy. Uchiha Sasuke seems to be everything Naruto is not, perfect looks, prodigious intelligence and skills, a cold and aloof personality, and the respect and love of several people. The boy does not seem to care though, and treats everyone condescendingly, especially Naruto. They are placed under the wing of Hatake Kakashi, a very mysterious figure who has a habit of reading a lewd book. Together, they go on several missions, eventually building a strong, albeit hesitant and grudging, friendship wherein they would do anything for each other. As the series progresses, various elements are thrown into the mix, a witty blend of comedy, action, and a little bit of romance. The plot deepens, leading to the revelation of Sasuke’s bitter past and his eventual descent into darkness and Naruto and Sakura’s desperation to save him from his demons, all the while battling enemy ninja with their own evil agendas.

This anime is popular for a reason. It will have you falling in love with the plot and the characters, laughing with them in the happy moments, and even crying with them in the sad ones. This anime is definitely worth watching. Even if you are not yet an anime fan, you will enjoy it.

Andrew Wills asked:

Naruto is one of the most popular manga and anime series around. It features a young boy, Naruto, whose body actually contains the spirit of a fearsome nine-tailed fox that had been terrorizing his village some twelve years earlier. At that time, this nasty fox was captured and its spirit was sealed in the body of a baby boy (our Naruto).

Jump ahead twelve years and you’ve got the star of the story, now a mischievous and hyperactive young ninja with great aspirations. Both Naruto anime (animated television shows) and manga (the comic book series) go through episodes of high-flung adventures battling monsters, other ninjas and, last but not least, doing ninja exams.

Both the manga and anime series have spawned numerous fan sites and forums, with all manner of products available online (screen savers, online games, etc.) and for sale (apparel, DVDs, and more). But what lies behind this popular series is an interesting fact: the story of Naruto is based solidly on traditional Japanese culture.

Author and artist Masashi Kishimoto was born in Japan in 1974 and it is an area very rich in history. Kishimoto won Shonen Jump magazine’s Hop Step Award for new manga artists with his manga Karakuri, but he didn’t stop there. His first Naruto version was a story of fox spirits and the story grew. It fast became a most popular ninja manga, in fact one of the most popular in Japan.

What may have escaped some western Naruto fans is the interesting story of the fox. Fox myths abound in Japanese culture, dating back as far as the fifth century B.C. Stories portray foxes as intelligent beings possessing magical abilities which increase as they age and gain wisdom. One of their tricks is their ability to shape-shift and sometimes they take on the form of a human. Some tales have them tricking others by changing into human form while others describe them as friends or guardians or even wives.

A kitsune (the Japanese word for fox) can have up to nine tails, as did the evil fox in Naruto’s past. And from the older stories, it seems that the more tails he has, the more powerful he is. Most folk tales state that a fox will grow more tails only after it’s lived for one thousand years.

Interestingly, Japanese folklore originally portrayed the fox as having only good attributes, and their evil and mischievous traits came in with Chinese and Korean folk tales. Some consider the kitsune as a deity and they will make offerings to them. There are quite a few tales about kitsune, both good and evil, with foxes shape-shifting into human form (a skill they only acquire after the age of 100) and then covertly living as part of a family until finally being discovered (they often seem to have trouble hiding their tails when assuming human form!).

A common belief is that foxes will impersonate beautiful women. Early in Japan’s history, it was thought that any woman alone, particularly at night, could actually be a fox. Other stories tell of fox spirits inhabiting humans: there is even a word, Kitsunetsuki, which means “the state of being possessed by a fox.” It’s been said that humans possessed by fox spirits tend to go mad and run naked through the streets, among other things.

However, our Naruto isn’t evil or nasty. It’s easy to see, though, how he gets away with so much mischief. A popular and adventurous story, it will be that way for generations to come.

Adrian Adams asked:

Uzumaki Naruto is the main protagonist of the anime series called Naruto, created by Masashi Kishimoto, a renowned Mangaka (Japanese for Comic Artist). Naruto is shown to have blue eyes and blond spiky hair. In part 1, he wears a loud orange jacket and some equally loud orange trousers, blue ninja sandals, and a blue hitai-ate or a forehead protector bearing the symbol of the hidden leaf. The insignia he bears is that of a whirlpool. In part 2, Naruto’s outfit is basically the same, consisting of trousers and a jacket, but this time its colors are black and orange.

Naruto’s Story

During the date of Naruto’s birth, October 10, the nine-tailed demon fox was ravaging Konohakagure, otherwise known as the village of the hidden leaf. The fourth Hokage, who was the leader and defender of the village, gave his life to seal the demon fox inside Naruto’s body. His dying wish was that the village would treat the boy as a hero for having to carry the burden of the fox. However, the people of Konoha did not heed the Yondaime’s request, instead treating Naruto with disdain and scorn. Their hatred was carried over to the younger generation, so practically the whole village hated him for no reason.

Naruto did not understand this hatred, however, and was bewildered at why the adults hated him and why his peers did not want to play with him. It was only when he was 12 years old that the reason why the people hated him was revealed to him. However, this knowledge did not lead him to hate the villagers and their misplaced odium. Instead, it only made Naruto more determined to gain the recognition of the villagers by becoming a Hokage himself.

Naruto’s Personality

At the start of the series, Naruto is depicted as a troublemaker. He was always doing lude jutsus or ‘ninja skills’ like the ‘Oiroke no Jutsu’ which allowed him to transform into a naked female version of himself, effectively stunning his superiors including his teacher, Iruka, and the third Hokage, who resumed his post when the fourth died. He also gets the lowest marks in the Ninja Academy, making him a subject of his classmates’ mockery. He is rude and crass and incredibly loud. He laughs easily and is almost always smiling. However, this is only a facade.

Deep inside, Naruto harbors deep feelings, hiding the ill ones behind his smiles and laughs so that nobody will have to worry about him or see his vulnerability. Naruto is also hardworking and persevering. He never gives up, no matter how impossible his goal may seem. And most of the time, he succeeds, if only through determination, sheer strength (sometimes lent to him by the demon fox) and his incredible luck.
